What are commuter benefits?
Pre-tax dollars for qualified commuting expenses.
A commuter benefit program lets employees set aside pre-tax dollars each month for qualified mass-transit, vanpool, and parking costs. The are $340 for transit/vanpool and $340 for parking; contributions above the caps are paid with post-tax dollars.
Like other pre-tax payroll deductions, commuter contributions also reduce , so both sides see savings.
How NueSynergy administers it
Monthly elections, debit card, and payroll sync.
Commuter benefits are month-to-month rather than annual, which adds administrative steps most HR teams don't want to own:
- Monthly elections: Employees set and adjust their transit and parking amounts through the member portal.
- Debit card at point of sale: Transactions at eligible transit and parking vendors run through the commuter card, so there's no reimbursement paperwork for everyday rides.
- Payroll integration: Elections sync to payroll each cycle, with reporting back to finance.
Note on remote and hybrid work: Commuter benefits only cover days when the employee actually commutes to a qualifying work location. We help employees adjust their monthly elections as their schedules change.
